First date
My first date with David was a sort of run-of-the-mill date. My roommate during my Sophmore year at college was dating his roommate and David asked me to go with them to a movie. I don’t remember what the movie was but it was a typical upbeat 1950s movie with lots of music and dancing. Coming home from the movie David and I were sitting in the back seat of his roommate”s car. I was finding David more and more interesting. Here was a boy who already knew what he wanted to do with his life.
At one point during our conversation I started reciting a poem (I don’t remember why):
”My heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky”
David joined in
“So was it when my life began. So is it now I am a man”
Whoo! What was this? A man reciting poetry? And that was the conversation that changed my life.I had dated a lot of boys (that was the custom in the 50s)but never one that recited poetry. This was a different creature from the high school boys I was used to.
From that moment David became the center of my life.
