Covid 19
What a basketball season it had been with close, exciting games in the ACC. Now we are at March Madness and UVA is in the finals! We exist in a state of eager anticipation! But as we settle into comfortable chairs in front of the TV we are aware—something is wrong. Terrible wrong! A few people wander around on the basketball court and the stadium seats are almost empty. Finally an announcer says “ The game is canceled until further notice.” Canceled ? How could that be?
The announcer goes on to explain: “A dangerous new plague has been discovered. Everyone is advised to avoid crowds and wear masks.”
We had in our garage a few masks that David used in gardening. We selected two and gave the rest to our neighbors.
The restrictions continued to grow. Schools were closed, persons in Nursing Homes were restricted to their rooms with no family visits, All public celebrations and gatherings were discouraged.
As well as restrictions rumors also continue to grow: the virus came from China—No it came from animals or it came from unsupervised laboratories and on and on with undocumented information. Doctors and Scientists were puzzled.
Some weeks later a new vaccine was discovered that could possibly help. The leaders here at Brandermill Woods decided to take advantage of this. A clinic was set up at the Assisted Living dining room. Everyone was shuttled over and given a shot. We all hoped this would take care of the problem and we would soon be back to normal. But—not so. As I write this in 2025 Covid is still with us. We have had our fifth shot now and we expect the virus to be with us permanently and like Polio we will need a yearly shot.
Covid has had many repercussions. Many workers have decided to work at home permanently or part time. Children have suffered from being out of school—both in academic achievements or social interaction. Our world will never be quite the same.
