My Cancer Experience
In 20O5 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma—Cancer! I had had skin cancers since I was in my 30s, but this was different. I had watched my Mother die of cancer—my beloved sister, Gloria—my best friend, Betty Ray, and many of my high school classmates—all with cancer.
It was not an easy journey for me. I had a full treatment of chemotherapy, my veins collapsed, a port was put in my shoulder and I suffered. At first the doctors thought it was a growth. I had an operation that removed my left kidney. Then, with tests,pp they discovered it was cancer.
I had survived and what followed made up for my suffering. I wrote a book, Fear Not! Learn from your Cancer for Abingdon Press. I had a good Editor and a good Publisher. Then here in three different churches in Richmond, I gave a 6-weeks workshop on my book. I also spoke to many groups and Conferences all around the country. In addition I wrote articles for Cancer magazines and held book signings.
We formed support groups The participants shared with me their experiences and ways they coped. We concluded that cancer is a unique experience and though it helps to share with other survivors we basically face it alone.
In spite of a good outcome it is not something I would want to go through again.
