David Becomes a District Superintendent

David became superintendent of the Lynchburg District and this became a different way of life for us. I was no longer actively engaged in the life of a local church and I think David missed regular weekly preaching and the individual contact with parishioners. He was responsible for 90 churches and tried to visit each one. He faced a problem with clergy couples. Which parsonage would they live in? Which one got the biggest salary? What happened when one congregation wanted the pastor to move and the other one didn’t? Pastors were assigned for one year at a time. At Annual Conference, Superintendents from the 19 Districts met with the Bishop and tried to sort out these appointments to everyone’s satisfaction—an impossible task!
